ENG: Drinking tea in Doi Mae Salong, where high-quality oolong tea bushes from Taiwan were planted by remnants of the anti-communist Kuomintang (KMT) forces that refused to surrender to the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) in 1949. KMT soldiers settled in Mae Salong in 1961. For many years they engaged in the illegal opium and heroin trade, alongside the drug warlord Khun Sa of the Shan United Army. Crop substitution programs eventually successfully replaced poppy cultivation and the opium trade with the cultivation of tea, coffee, corn, and orchards. Chiang Rai Province Thailand.
